Andrew's Best Economic Book Picks

"Don't overstate your likely achievements; when in doubt, understate them." --Alan S. Blinder, After the Music Stopped: The Financial Crisis, the Response, and the Work Ahead

My entire life I have had a love for economics and finance. I read extensively on the subject. Listed below are several books I highly recommend.

Risk, Choice, and Uncertainty: Three Centuries of Economic Decision-Making by George G. Szpiro: A fairly advanced book on how concepts like supply/demand curves and equilibrium came to be developed and how people make economic decisions.

The Worldly Philosophers: The Lives, Times, and Ideas of the Great Economic Thinkers (Revised) by Robert L. Heilbroner: A beginner’s guide to key economists and the history of the subject. Very readable and fun!

Great Economic Thinkers: An Introduction-From Adam Smith to Amartya Sen by Jonathan Conlin: A more advanced treatment of the history of economic thinkers. Deals with more contemporary economists than the previous book.

Liar's Poker: Rising Through the Wreckage on Wall Street (Anniversary) by Michael Lewis: Reads like a thriller! Tells the story of the go-go 80s debt markets led by Salomon Brothers.

Nudge: The Final Edition (Revised) by Cass R. Sunstein and Richard H. Thaler: One of the best books of behavioral economics and the importance of framing decisions.

After the Music Stopped: The Financial Crisis, the Response, and the Work Ahead by Alan S. Blinder: The quintessential book on the 2008-09 financial crisis.

Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk by Peter L. Bernstein: A history of the financialization of markets. Discusses the development of things like derivatives and mutual funds.

Capitalism, Alone: The Future of the System That Rules the World by Branko Milanovic: Many would concede that capitalism has won as the only way to organize an economy. This book discusses America and China take different approaches to it.
