November New Releases We're Excited For!

The nights are getting longer and there are so many good new releases coming out to fill the reading hours! Our book buyers found their favorites to highlight for either a gift for a loved one, or a new evening read!

The Name of This Band Is R.E.M.: A Biography by Peter Ames Carlin

I’m dating myself again, but here is the story of the soundtrack to my formative years. Even if you’re not a stan like myself, this is a band that molded indie rock and their story is fascinating. And there’s pictures of Michael Stipe with hair.

What We Tried to Bury Grows Here by Julian Zabalbeascoa

This novel is published by Two Dollar Radio, whose taste I absolutely trust. It is the story of the Spanish Civil War, told through a chorus of different voices. How do ordinary people maintain their humanity when their country is being torn apart?

Continuing our journey abroad: here we have ten writers of African descent who are traveling across the continent. Through poems, travel diaries, and essays, these authors explore travel, grief, family history, and what it means to go home.

Blues in Stereo: The Early Works of Langston Hughes by Langston Hughes, Danez Smith

Another collection for you. My favorite poet, Smith, curates and provides commentary in this collection of both finished and raw, work-in-progress poems from the great Harlem Renaissance writer, Langston Hughes.

Lazarus Man by Richard Price

In this novel set in Harlem in 2008, a tenement building collapses. Through the intertwining stories of four characters affected by the disaster, Price, who is known for chronicling urban America, writes a book of suspense and social vision.

Vanishing Treasures: A Bestiary of Extraordinary Endangered Creatures by Katherine Rundell

And now for something completely different! This collection of essays celebrates 23 miraculous, awe-inspiring animals who are facing extinction. Rundell urges us to look at the world with new eyes and reckon with this magic and its disappearance.

The famed author of Braiding Sweetgrass is back with a slim book about how to orient our lives around gratitude and community based on lessons from the natural world. This woman is so wise I would follow her into battle. And may have to.

Memories of Distant Mountains: Illustrated Notebooks, 2009-2022 by Orhan Pamuk, Ekin Oklap

Complete with paintings by the Nobel winner himself, these notebooks shed light on the writer’s life, process, and inspirations. Like Blues In Stereo, this beautiful book would make a lovely gift for a writer.

We all know how much I love a good short story, so I can’t wait for this collection that explores the dark side of family and femininity. Wood has been compared to Lily King, whom I adore, and I’m eager for these stories of women behaving as they want to.

ABOUT THE BOOKSELLERS

Despite spending decades on the East Coast, Llalan remains a stalwart Midwesterner. And although she has an MA in Publishing and Writing from Emerson College in Boston, she prefers the life of a Bookstore Lady. Llalan loves literary fiction, nature writing, and craft beer.

Jordan, our YA, middle grade, and children's book buyer, has a fraternal twin sister. She has never been on an airplane--the farthest she has ever traveled was New Jersey by train. She is an avid K-Pop Collector and owns over 500 K-Pop albums!
